In 2007, a humble chili dubbed “Ghost Chili” (Bhut Jolokia) from India has become the world’s hottest chili with over 1 million SHU (Scoville Heat Unit)*. The official holder now is Naga Viper pepper (over 1.3million SHU) of England. But in April 2011 another chili has taken over the reign. It is closer to home. A farm in Lake Macquarie in NSW, Australia, has grown now the world hottest chili which tops over 1.4million SHU – a world’s record. And the sauce made from that chili has been commercially available. This is the burning story on fire !!

That farm belong to The Chili Factory (http://thechillifactory.com) who manufacture the plant and the sauce from seed made by Hippy Seed Company also of NSW. And this funny looking chili have very long name: “ Trinidad Scorpion Butch Taylor Cultivar” – let’s just call it “Scorpion chili”.

Trinidad Scorpion Butch Taylor Cultivar chili, photo: thechillifactory.com

The Guinness Book of Record is still yet to verify the official result, but the sauce has been launched at Sydney Easter Show 2011. And I have got the sauce early for my enjoyment! The sauce called “Scorpion Strike: Stupidly Hot BBQ Sauce” and it is really really hot!

You can buy the sauce online from The Chili Factory and set you down $15 per 150 ml bottle. It’s not as cheap as ordinary chili sauce but this sauce is no where near ordinary. It’s superb compliment of your chili crave on almost any dish.

For a start, it is really hot. It only contains 58% of Scorpion chili but if you are after hot chili condiment, you will not be disappointed.

As a chili lover, sometimes I am really disappointed with the non existent commercial scale or standard of the hotness of chilli. I mean a lot of sauces in Wollies or Coles put label “hot” or even “extra hot”, but it is no where near hot. Maybe it is time for the fair trading to act on this, as it’s misleading. It’s the same thing of a packaged mentions “Chocolate taste” and the taste is not chocolate – it’s misleading. Well, yes, of course you will find better variety and taste in local Asian grocery, but still… there is no reference that you can hold on.

The second best thing about this Scorpion Strike sauce is the taste is neutral. It’s not too sweet, it’s not too salty, it’s not too sour, just a subtle hint of Worcestershire sauce and vinegar. This means it will not ruin the taste of original dish that you eat. This sauce simply just fire on it.

Scorpion Stricke Sauce on Fire

I will not think that this sauce will become mainstream sauce as it is simply too hot for average people, but it will be a top star among chili lovers. A few drop on each intake will be put your mouth on pleasant fire, but more than that just prepare those milk, banana, or water on stand by to put of the fire. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

However, it’s not a bad idea for every household to have this bottle ready at your place. Beside for occasional use, it is ready for any of your friend boasted about how he/shee can handle chilli – Give him/her a lesson with a strike of a scorpion !!! it’s gonna be fun !

Here is the direct link to order the sauce (no, this is not paid review, I don’t get a cent giving you this link: Scorpion Strike.

For the rest of you who cannot handle such heat, you can start buy this “extra hot sauce” that which is really ” a little bit heat” on your local supermarket

"Extra Hot" that not so hot

So as for “Spatha Rating” – with full bias (as I like it very much) I can only give this sauce the full 9 Spatha rating for the best hot chilli sauce of the year !!

Take care and enjoy !

Scorpion Strike Sauce

*)Scoville scale is a measurement to indicates the amount of “fire unit” (capsaicin) on a chili or sauce. As a comparison, the famous Tabasco sauce has only around 8000 SHU. So if you cannot handle Tabasco sauce, just forget this sauce as it will be around 175 x more heat.

9 Spatha for Scorpion Strike Sauce
